Thriller DVD - The Seduction a z-grade erotic thriller, tells the story of a TV newswoman spied upon and stalked by an obsessed fan. Jamie (Morgan Fairchild) is a beautiful, successful career woman. Derek (Andew Stevens) is an obsessed psychopath who watches her and attempts to become part of her life. When Jamie discovers his true intentions, she must fight for her life. The Seduction, is standard exploitation movie fare, with a fair amount of sex, violence and nudity. None of the characters are particularly believable, and the performances by both Fairchild and Stevens are sub-par. - The Seduction (DVD)
The story of David’s Seduction of Bathsheba, told in II Samuel 11: et seq., is omitted in Chronicles. The king, while walking on the roof of his house, saw Bathsheba, who was the wife of Uriah the Hittite, taking a bath. He immediately desired her. David then committed adultery with her and she conceived. In an effort to cover up his sin, David summoned Uriah from the army (with whom he was on campaign) in the hopes that Uriah would sleep with Bathsheba, and thus the child could be passed off as his. However, Uriah was unwilling to violate the ancient kingdom rule applying to warriors in active service (see Robertson Smith, "Religion of the Semites," pp. 455, 488). Rather than go home to his own bed, he preferred to remain with the palace troops. After repeated efforts to get Uriah to lie with Bathsheba, the king gave the order to his general, Joab, that Uriah should be abandoned during a heated battle, and left to the hands of the enemy. Ironically, David had Uriah himself unknowingly carry the message that ordered his death. After Uriah was gone, David made the now widowed Bathsheba his wife.
Not exactly. David did not order Uriah abandoned on the battlefield, he ordered Uriah to be one of the first to assault the city, which is most dangerous.
Perhaps what is unique in the Old Testament and Judaism is that all characters are absolutely human. There is no ideal hero - every great person has at least one flaw. This story is more a marker of David’s degradation in later life, which is expressed in numerous ways. For starters, David was always an active military commander from his very first days of leadership evading King Saul. Yet here we see him napping during the afternoon and taking pleasant strolls on the rooftops when his army is off on campaign. Old school David would have been there leading his men, but here we see that over time he’s gotten soft.
King David was ultimately human, and subsequently was swayed by the passions and desires of a human. Power corrupts, and even a great person will succumb to his darker desires sometimes. What redeems King David however is his overwhelming devotion to God through everything as well as his ability to unify the people. Whenever a prophet came to King David to denounce his actions, King David always accepted this critique and in earnest attempted to make ammends. This includes this particular story, where afterwards a prophet arrives to denounce David. David is sorely remorseful and does repent. This is important, because most rulers believe that they are above everything, including God, while David remained pious and humble. In other areas we also see that he was a ruler who cared for his people. King David is considered the line of the Messiah because he was a good ruler, a strong ruler, a pious ruler and a unifying ruler. Those are the qualities we expect from the Messiah, whenever he does come.
